LifeFlight makes accurate data instantly accessible

LifeFlight is an Australian aero-medical retrieval service and charity, established in 1986. Its mission is to save lives, speed recovery and serve the community by providing the highest standard of rapidly deploying critical care.

LifeFlight flies medical teams throughout the country to provide quicker medical treatment. It also transports patients to appropriate hospitals for care and upskills area first responders to better equip them to manage complex medical emergencies.

As LifeFlight’s flight missions increased each year, it invested in Nintex K2 Cloud to better manage the many moving parts within the organization’s various departments and divisions.

Who they are

LifeFlight is an Australian aero-medical retrieval service and charity, established in 1986.

What they needed

As LifeFlight’s flight missions increased each year, it needed a automation solution that could integrate with their existing systems and accelerate processes.

How they did it

LifeFlight made an aircraft tasking application to automate manual, repetitive tasks that had previously been consuming valuable time and attention.

Unifying departments and divisions

Challenge: Siloed systems blocked visibility

When LifeFlight’s services are needed, time is of the essence. A few lost seconds can make the difference between life and death.

As a critical care aero-medical retrieval service and charity, LifeFlight had many excellent, necessary processes in place to save lives. But, as solid as the foundation was, there were still improvements to be made – namely, in technology.

“The processes themselves were very good, but the menial processes were unnecessarily time consuming,” LifeFlight ICT Project Manager Shane Hoani said. “Communication was not always happening in the most efficient manner between departments and divisions.”

Once different departments started looking for their own ways to be more efficient, such as buying individual software, LifeFlight decided that it needed an organization-wide change.

Solution: Centralized workflows create efficiency

“We started talking about how there must be something out there with everything we need,” Hoani said. During LifeFlight’s search for technology to streamline processes, members of the team learned about Nintex K2 Cloud at a Microsoft conference. LifeFlight was interested after seeing a live demo, and decided that Nintex K2 Cloud met all their business requirements. LifeFlight was looking for to “automate our processes and join the dots between existing software solutions.”

To get the buy-in from everyone else, Hoani and his team focused on LifeFlight’s emergency response center and showed the manager a demo of Nintex K2 Cloud

“Once he saw what was possible with Nintex K2 Cloud, he was sold instantly,” Hoani said. “So, the first solution built was an aircraft tasking application for the LifeFlight Coordination Centre (C3). Before Nintex K2 Cloud, this aviation process was manually intensive. Now, the flow of information and data capture is far faster and much smoother.”

The new unified aircraft tasking application automates manual, repetitive tasks that had previously been consuming valuable time and attention.

“We are scoped to build more workflows into it,” Hoani said. “It’s been very successful and people have been very excited about it.”
