How connected is your new employee experience, really?

If you’re an HR or Operations leader, you know how complicated it is to fully onboard a new employee. HR, IT, Finance, and Operations teams all need to work with the new hire and the new hire’s manager to ensure they have the documentation, equipment, access, training, and resources they need to become part of your organization.

But the new employees themselves don’t know all that. They can’t see the intricacies of your org chart or understand the complexities of your internal approval process. They don’t know that onboarding tasks live in separate trackers, that an approval was stuck in someone’s inbox for a week while they were out of office, or that a next step got delayed due to other business priorities. All they know is how it feels to come onboard.

To them, each step — the application, multiple interviews, an offer letter, a start date, a first login, team introductions, a first assignment — is part of the same new hire experience. And how connected your processes are behind the scenes determines how they’ll feel about their onboarding.

To help determine how connected your employee experience feels to a new hire, we’ve developed an interactive assessment to categorize organizations into four tiers of connectedness:

  1. Connected experience: Your employee experience is largely connected and coordinated. There is strong visibility between teams, clear ownership of responsibilities, and consistent execution.
  2. Emerging connection: Some aspects of your employee experience are working well, but bottlenecks still create friction. The experience may vary by team, department, manager, or location.
  3. Fragmented experience: Your teams are working hard, but disconnected processes are creating unnecessary complexity. Employees may experience delays, repeated steps, and inconsistent communication.
  4. Highly disconnected: Your employee experience is likely negatively affecting your organization’s success. Onboarding depends heavily on manual follow-up, emails, spreadsheets, and individual effort.

If you want to identify where your organization falls and get advice on what to do next, no matter your current state, we recommend filling out the assessment. It’s step one toward making work life better for your people by connecting the fragmented processes that plague them from day one.
