Q&A with Nintex CRO Ben Brewer

Nintex recently named Ben Brewer as our newest Chief Revenue Officer. As Nintex CRO, Brewer is responsible for driving direct and partner sales worldwide for new and existing customers of Nintex’s industry-leading process management and automation solutions.

Ben holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Washington State University, lives in the Seattle area, will work from Nintex headquarters in Bellevue, Wash., and travel frequently to support Nintex sales across the globe.

We caught up with him after his first month working with the team to get to know him and hear more about his vision for Nintex’s future.

1. Tell us briefly about your background before coming to Nintex.

Before Nintex I was running the global SMB business at SAP Concur, as the SVP & GM. I was responsible for sales, marketing, and client success. We were an organization of 1,000 employees, responsible for around 30,000 clients, $500 million in revenue under management, and just over $200 million in net-new bookings.

2. How did you get into the tech industry?

Thomas Edison once said, “There’s a way to do it better – find it.” That really sums up what attracted me to the tech industry. Coming out of college and jumping into the corporate world, I was drawn to technology right of the gate for its problem-solving mentality and fast pace. The rest is history.

3. What made you want to join Nintex?

Having spent the majority of my career in the SaaS industry, working with companies of all sizes, I have always found a lot of satisfaction in helping corporations run more efficiently and effectively through the use of technology. There are very few companies around the globe that do that better than Nintex.

When I made the decision, I was ready for a change. I’d had a few opportunities come across my desk. Many started with how big their industry was, pitched how they were the next unicorn, etc. But when I spoke with our CEO, Eric Johnson, the thing he started with was the people. How much he enjoyed working in the Nintex family, and how people here genuinely want to drive great outcomes for the companies that use our product. You couple that with an industry-leading product stack and a senior leadership team with the amount of experience this one has – it was an opportunity I could not pass up.

4. What excites you the most about the future for Nintex and your new team?

We have an organization full of extremely talented people who are all focused on the massive opportunity in front of us. They aren’t overwhelmed or intimated by it. This group tackles each day with 100% focus and positive energy, and that really builds a special atmosphere.

6. What are your goals for your first 100 days as Nintex CRO?

Ask lots of questions, and listen to what people have to say. The people here have done some amazing things in a short amount of time. So I want to get up to speed on how they did it, what was the story before I got here, and how can I help write the next chapter — which is sure to be the best yet.

7. What do you think is the key to great leadership in a global technology company?

Leaders often spend a lot of time getting everyone on the same page and “rowing in the same direction.” But there can be an unintended consequence if people start to conform and lose their individuality — the reasons you brought them on in the first place. The key to building a strong team is looking at it as a mosaic, not a melting pot.

8. What is the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Trust is a currency. Spend time developing, spreading, and nourishing it. It’s the foundation everything is built on.

9.  How do like to spend your personal time outside of the office?

My wife and I both have demanding careers, so all our spare time is spent with our two daughters and with our extended family, who all live in the Seattle area. On the weekends, if we aren’t at the kids’ sporting events, you will typically find us out on the water (weather permitting) or around a table with friends and family enjoying a great meal and of course a few spirits.
