Marketers spend the majority of our time trying to break through the noise. And, as someone who has spent the past 23 years in the field of marketing, I know first-hand that breaking through the noise is not an easy task. The demand for what we market, how we market, where we market, and when we market is evolving rapidly.
We have to act faster than ever, try new things, and respond immediately when opportunities or challenges arise.
With new technologies, apps, and platforms for self-expression becoming increasingly available to anyone and everyone – our jobs have become part “art” and part “science.” The reality is that we, as marketers, spend a good portion of our time every year (likely before the start of a new calendar year or fiscal year) developing marketing and communications strategies and tactics to achieve the goals of our department and business.
Once these plans are set and approved, we become laser-focused on execution the remainder of the year. And, as communicators, we’ll spend a significant amount of time developing, testing, and refining our positioning and messaging to successfully reach and/or appeal to our target audiences. We also measure our success monthly, quarterly, annually, or even project-by-project. We learn as we go, and we course-correct when needed.
Occasionally, however, our marketing efforts are exceptional that they get recognized by others for just that – marketing excellence.
