They might not walk around in capes, masks, and costumes, but your employees are the superheroes of your organization.
As the story goes, the superhero (employee) is on a mission (job performance) to save the world (achieve business goals, KPIs, ROI). Along the way, the superhero (employee) seeks the help of a guide or mentor (leadership) to help them battle villains (competition, economic conditions), using their superpowers (training, learning, performance support), until they are able to set things right. At the end, they realize that they have been transformed as a result of their adventure, having gained a greater understanding of self and the nature of their journey.
So what are you doing to empower your employees to be your organization’s superheroes? Here are four ways that you can help them to save the world:

- Set clear expectations
To perform like a superhero, employees need to know what is expected of them. Performance expectations serve as a foundation for clear communications and establish a path for success. In a recent onboarding survey by bambooHR, an astounding 60 percent of companies indicated that they do not set any milestones or concrete goals for employees. Unsurprisingly, in these situations, it took new hires a whole year to start working at their full potential. So for super-performance make sure performance goals are clearly explained.

- Do not take them for granted
A lack of praise and recognition is commonly cited as a top reason that employees are unhappy at their jobs and high on the list of reasons why they leave. On the flip side, recognizing an employee’s commendable contribution (superpowers) is a great way to motivate workers and even increase productivity. Recognition can come from something as small as a handwritten note to say “thank you” for a job well done to a promotion. Managers should make sure exemplary employees who are engaged, communicative and productive are publicly, instantly and consistently rewarded. These employees and their efforts should not be taken for granted – they are the ones who will help you achieve your company goals and inspire others to follow their example.

Leadership is a serious responsibility and employees expect a lot from their leaders. Foremost, leaders should recognize that people are the company’s most important asset. The challenge is for their behaviors and attitudes towards their team to accurately reflect that premise. Some defining qualities of great leaders, in addition to leadership, are: good listeners and communicators, engagers, opportunity enablers, exceptional coaches, charismatic and, ultimately, intuitively connected to the needs of their employees.
